MEDICATION

Medication can be an essential part of treatment for mental health problems. Many behavioral and mental health problems have a medical cause, so they respond well to medications. Most medications prescribed for mental health problems are safe. They have been well researched and have been used by millions of people. Most medications that are used to treat mental health problems are not addictive, and if given properly, will not change your personality or intelligence. Taking medication is not a sign of weakness, but rather, a sign that you are working to improve your mental health.

Once your doctor or nurse practitioner prescribes medication, she should be willing to describe the side effects of the medication and be willing to listen when you have complaints or concerns about the medication. Most medications have side effects. They often subside after a few weeks, but people are individual and if the side effects are unbearable, your doctor should listen.

In addition to medication, you should also be involved in other kinds of programs such as counseling, patient education and other services that meet your needs. Medication works best when it is used in combination with other mental health treatments. After your child has been prescribed the medication, she should be closely evaluated by a physician or a nurse practitioner.

Many medications also interact with certain drugs (including over-the-counter drugs), herbal remedies, and some even with certain foods.
